2 pêcheurs manipulent des filets

Hello everyone,

I’m pretty self-satisfied I can share this announcement about the availability of the Retraceur next major release first beta version. Version 2.0.0 is slated for stable release on September 21st: Saint Matthew’s Day!

In the meantime, I’m starting the review and documentation phase of my work thanks to the publication of a pre-releases series I’m launching with this beta1. Although I’ll likely be the only beta tester, I am conscientiously reproducing practices I learned when I was a lead developer for one of the WordPress®‘s open source projects. You never know, some of you may need to free yourselves from Mr. Mullenweg’s toxic leadership by contributing to Retraceur: a WP fork that puts ethics first.

To take this eventuality into account, here’s some important information about the upcoming Retraceur second major version.

2 deep divergences

The Post Formats theme feature has been completely revamped

While Mr. Mullenweg’s WP has neglected this theme feature since its introduction in 2011, Retraceur 2.0.0 brings it back to the forefront by completely rewriting it.

It’s obvious: your very own online publication hub needs a fancy way — in line with your active theme capabilities — to let you potentially share code, status updates, photos, asides, links, chat transcripts, image galleries, quotes, movies, sounds and regular posts into your publication stream using a dedicated output for each format.

If, like « Point » — the bundled default Retraceur theme — your active theme is supporting one or more Post Formats, you’ll be able to select the best format to structure your content front-end layout within the Post Editor as well as to customize Post Format templates from the Site Editor.

1 click Retraceur Coeur Upgrade

Updating a software is too sensitive to let it run in the background.

Here comes the first iteration of the Retraceur Updates API, it’s primarily focusing on the core software.

As soon as a new Retraceur release is available, the next time you’ll visit your dashboard, an update notification inside your main menu will inform you about it. Head over to your Retraceur Updates administration screen & choose whether to directly launch the 1 click process or download the release package to perform a manual upgrade.

👉 Retraceur Cœur updates stay under your control.

PS : to test this API when the 2nd beta or the release candidate is made available, you will need to use a filter hook to place in a /wp-content/mu-plugins/index.php file of your staging website. Below is the what I called « a filter hook » looks like.

Three more things!

  • You can now customize Post Format names, descriptions & URLs from a dedicated Administration screen.
  • Share your Paypal profile thanks to the new Paypal item added to the social links block.
  • Password security has been strengthened thanks to bcrypt encryption.

Ready to go fishing for bugs?

The whole point of pre-releases is to ensure that the software updates work as expected and haven’t caused regressions or generated bugs. This is especially important since Retraceur offers configuration, customization, and extension options that you can use in very different ways: I can’t anticipate them all in my tests!

Contributing to the beta test of this 2.0.0-beta1 is an investment in the stability of your installation and contributes to the stability of all other users. If you’ve chosen to trust Retraceur to power your online publishing hub, I encourage you to fish with me and report any bugs you encounter.

NB: do not test Retraceur on your production website; use a local development site (using MAMP, LAMP, or WAMP, depending on your hardware) or a remote one. If you have forgotten how to install Retraceur since version 1.0.0, please have a look at this documentation resource.
